Steel Dragon will perform in Hiller Student Union, on the campus of Penn State DuBois, on Feb. 27.
DuBOIS, Pa. — The Penn State DuBois Office of Student Engagement will welcome students and members of the public to Hiller Student Union on Thursday, Feb. 27, for a show by Steel Dragon, a martial arts and lion dance studio in Lawrenceville’s Ice House Studios.
The show will begin at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Lawrenceville’s Ice House Studios is home to the talented Lion Dance troupe Steel Dragon. The lion dance, with a history spanning over a thousand years, is said to have originated from a dream of a Chinese emperor who saw a lion-like creature save him from evil spirits. Since lions were unknown in China, artisans created a creature blending features of the dragon, phoenix and dog.
The lion dance embodies Chinese culture, history and philosophy, incorporating elements of Chinese opera, literature, Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Five Element theory and martial arts. Today, it’s an important tradition in Chinese and many Southeast Asian cultures, including those of Vietnam, Korea and Japan.
The program is presented by the Penn State DuBois Office of Student Engagement as part of the Diversity, Arts, and Lecture Series. For more information, contact Haley Rummel, student engagement assistant, through email at [email protected] or via phone at 814-375-4851.
